Observation Narrative
Plot location: Marsh on west side of Major Branch of the Northwest River, 0.8 miles NW of Rt. 168 Bridge. Plot center marked by a 1" white PVC pipe.
NOTE: Water level of river ca. 25cm below high water mark on trees on both dates of visit.
Refractometer measurement: 1.5- 2.0 ppt in main river channel (10/16/95).
One of several pocket marshes along the major branch of the Northwest River just west of Rt. 168, representing the extreme upstream limit of marsh vegetation along this river. Invasion of shrubs (especially Myrica cerifera, Rosa palustris, Salix carolinana, and sapling Acer rubrum) appear to be increasing in these marshes. Sapling Acer rubrum in this plot have ca. 9 annual growth rings at breaast height, but are lichen-covered and appear unthrifty. The herbaceous vegetation of this plot represents a highly mixed composition of low- to medium-statured forbs and sedges.
